I started DJing back in 96 in the warehouse rave days where I got into my happy hardcore. I loved all the pianos and hands-in-the-air stuff. I put on a few events with friends and went on to be stage manager for Club Empire under 18s nightclub in Guildford. This was a great opportunity to work alongside some of the big name acts of the time. I even dabbled a bit as an MC to Drum & Bass for a short while. As the scene died around '98 / '99, I turned to 2-step and UK Garage, it was artists like Artful Dodger and Sunship, and labels like Locked On that inspired me to DJ and I realy loved the soulful vocals and more upbeat sounds. The transistion into playing funky house was a very natural, organic process. The Garage scene began drying up and I started to listen to a lot of Hed Kandi releases. I built a web site for Zest DJ Agency and through that I got to know a few people that were really into their funky house music. Artists such as Soul Avengerz, Ian Carey, Disco Darlings, Freemasons were really doing it for me back then and still are today. I tend to lean towards the disco side of funky house. I love heavy piano riffs, catchy vocal hooks and the occasional dark bassline. |
